Comparison
Birdray vs Insurance Xdate for California contractor prospecting
Insurance Xdate is a national workers' comp prospecting database used by commercial producers in every state. Birdray is a California-only outbound partner built on the complete contractor licence record. In California the two overlap more than either would like to admit, and the differences are in what sits around the x-date.
Xdate's supported-states page labels California workers' comp data as "Contractors & Multi-State Only" and shows premium, incumbent agency and residual-market flags as unavailable there. Its help centre lists premium data for GA, IL, TX, OK, NV, CO and VT, agency data for CO, FL, GA, IL, NV, NH, VT and ME, and experience-mod data for PA, NJ, DE, MN and NC. We read those pages on 4 September 2026.

Choose Xdate when
- ›You write commercial accounts outside California or across many industries
- ›You want experience mods and WCIRB classes in the record today
- ›You already run your own outbound and only want the list
Choose Birdray when
- ✓Your book is California contractors and you want the whole market, not the policies a bureau file happens to include
- ✓You want the change signals: lapses, bond suspensions, new licences, permits, first hires
- ✓You want someone to run the outbound with you, in your name, and you don't want a competitor nearby using the same engine
Our verdict
For California contractors, both products start from the same public record. Xdate adds bureau and firmographic fields; Birdray adds every change around the licence and the outbound to act on it. If you sell to contractors in one California territory, Birdray. If you sell everything everywhere, Xdate, or both.
Frequently asked
- Does Insurance Xdate have California x-dates?
- Yes, for contractors and multi-state accounts, per its availability map. The dates come from the CSLB certificates that Birdray also loads. For other California businesses Xdate does not show workers' comp data.
- Which has experience mods for California?
- Xdate shows the field as available. Birdray does not carry it yet; the WCIRB sells the mod file only to insurers and registered advisory organizations, and we say so rather than guess.
- Can I use both?
- Yes. Several agencies keep a national database for the rest of the book and use Birdray for California contractor outbound.
